The Summit Institute’s mission is to prepare California’s diverse student population for acceptance to and success in four year college and to be contributing members of society. Given our state's economic climate, achieving The Summit Institute's mission is critical.
The results of California’s public school system are shocking. - 550,000 9th graders enter high school each year
- 30% drop out
- 46% earn a high school diploma
- Only 24% graduate eligible to enter a four year college
Summit Preparatory Charter High School consistently produces fundamentally better student results than our existing public schools. - 100% of Summit’s graduates are eligible for UC/CSU acceptance
- 96% of Summit’s first three graduating classes have applied to and been accepted to at least one four year college
The 76% of California’s students who graduate ineligible and unprepared to enter a four year college or university represent an underserved majority. They enter adult life with an “academic debt” which makes it highly improbable that they will go on to earn a college degree. As a result, their predicted lifetime earnings are less than half of what their college educated peers will earn. Beyond the individual impact, the link between the relative success or failure of American public education and our country’s economic health and prosperity is undeniable. And, our current public education system has produced the same drop out and college ready rates for the past 30 years. As the founder of Summit Preparatory High School, I was issued a challenge to build a model high school that would consistently produce fundamentally different results – prepare 100% of students for success in a four year college. Eight years later not only have we built the model, Summit Preparatory Charter High School www.summitprep.net, but we have replicated it, Everest Public High School www.everestphs.org.
As charter schools, Summit and Everest are public schools, but operate outside of the traditional school district system. Last year Summit Prep received over 450 applications for 100 available spots, with students accepted by a random drawing. Seventeen years after the creation of the charter movement, the opportunity to replicate successful school models has never been greater.
Our team of leaders, teachers, and supporters is embarking upon an aggressive strategy to immediately replicate the Summit Model in the Bay Area, and eventually throughout California. We have plans for four new schools to launch in the next three years.
For those who are committed to changing the current course of our country’s future, there are many opportunities for impactful involvement and support. I encourage you to contact me today.
Sincerely,
Diane Tavenner CEO and Founder The Summit Institute
